Install FactIQ

Choose where you want to use FactIQ, then follow the setup steps below. You'll add FactIQ as a custom plugin, sign in securely in your browser, and be ready to ask questions in a new conversation. FactIQ is free to start, although your AI client may require a paid plan.

Claude

Basic questions work in Claude Chat; Cowork gives FactIQ the best support for advanced reports and local visualizations. On Claude Team, any member can install FactIQ as a custom plugin unless organization policy blocks it.

Open Customize → Plugins in Claude, then click the plus button to add a custom plugin.
Select Add marketplace → Add from a repository and enter:

Open the new factiq marketplace, choose FactIQ, and click Install.
Click Connect, finish the browser sign-in, and start a new chat. If Claude does not prompt you, open Customize → Plugins → FactIQ → Connectors → FactIQ → Connect.
Confirm FactIQ is installed under Customize → Plugins and connected under Customize → Connectors.

Ask normally or type /factiq to choose FactIQ explicitly. See our Claude installation guide for more details.

ChatGPT

Install from the ChatGPT desktop app. One custom installation covers ChatGPT app surfaces, including Codex in the app. Workspace owners may need to enable developer mode or approve the plugin.

Open Plugins in the desktop app's left sidebar.
Choose Create → Add marketplace, paste the repository below as the source, and leave the other fields empty.

defog-ai/factiq-plugin

Find FactIQ in the custom marketplace you added and click Install.
Complete the FactIQ sign-in in your browser, then start a new chat.

Ask normally or type @FactIQ to select it explicitly. See our ChatGPT installation guide for more details.

Claude Code

For local sessions, one terminal installation covers the Claude Code CLI, desktop app, and IDE extensions on that machine.

Add the FactIQ marketplace and install the plugin:

Run /reload-plugins, then /mcp, and select factiq.
Finish the browser sign-in. Email, Google, and passkey are supported.

Claude Code cloud sessions

Cloud sessions run on Anthropic infrastructure and cannot see plugins installed on your machine. Add the following to the repository's checked-in .claude/settings.json instead:

Codex CLI

This installs FactIQ for the Codex CLI. If FactIQ is already installed in the ChatGPT desktop app, Codex in that app is covered; only the CLI needs this separate setup.

Add the marketplace and plugin:

Run codex mcp login factiq and finish the browser sign-in.
Start a new Codex thread; an already-running thread will not pick up the new connection.

Custom installations in managed workspaces

Business, Enterprise, Team, and Edu workspaces can restrict custom plugin sources, developer mode, skills, connectors, or code execution. When installation is blocked, an owner or admin must allow the FactIQ repository or approve the custom plugin. FactIQ is open source so administrators can review the plugin before enabling it.

Authorize and verify

FactIQ uses browser-based OAuth with read-only factiq:read access. No API key is required, and FactIQ cannot modify your systems. Queries and responses are operationally logged by FactIQ. Read the Privacy Policy and data-deletion page for details.

After connecting, start a new conversation and ask: “Chart the US unemployment rate over the last 10 years and cite the series.” A successful answer invokes FactIQ and identifies its sources.

Update or remove FactIQ

FactIQ combines official economic series, company financials, management commentary in earnings calls and media appearances, live markets, and satellite-derived signals. See our Data Catalog for details on the available datasets, sources, and history.

How to use FactIQ

State the subject, geography, measure, time range, frequency, and desired output. Ask for citations and request an explicit caveat when sources are not directly comparable.

Economic research

Chart US unemployment and labor-force participation since 2000. Annotate recessions.
Compare headline and core inflation in the US, UK, and India over the last five years.

Company research

Compare revenue growth and operating margin for Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon.
What changed in management commentary across the last four earnings calls for Nvidia?

Alternative signals

Compare nighttime-light intensity across Indian states and explain the limitations.
Show recent fire activity around this bounding box and summarize the trend.

Outputs

FactIQ can discover and compare series, calculate changes and ratios, create charts, and assemble multi-section research reports.

What FactIQ cannot answer

FactIQ should not guess when coverage is missing, promise real-time or exhaustive coverage, replace professional financial advice, or make unlike measures comparable without a defensible transformation. It cannot bypass the 50-row result cap; ask for an aggregation instead.

Security and privacy

OAuth and permissions

FactIQ uses browser-based OAuth; there is no API key to paste into the plugin. The client stores and refreshes the resulting token. Disconnecting FactIQ in your client revokes that client connection.

Requests and data access

FactIQ records the tool used, its inputs, and returned data for a limited operational period to operate and debug the service. This data is not sold, used for advertising, or used to train AI models. Data queries run through a read-only database role.

Local files and commands

The plugin includes local scripts for terminal previews and bespoke HTML visualizations. They act only when your coding agent runs them under the host client's normal file and command permissions. FactIQ's remote data tools do not receive general access to your repository or shell.

Optional visualization dependency

The optional screenshot renderer installs Playwright and Chromium into ~/.factiq/viz-venv on first use; it does not modify system Python. The base scripts do not contact the network, but a bespoke HTML visualization may load libraries you choose from a public CDN. Avoid external libraries when an entirely local artifact is required.

Troubleshooting

Plugins are unavailable

Use a supported client and plan, update the client, and confirm that your workspace allows custom plugins. ChatGPT plugins require the desktop app.

A custom installation is blocked

Confirm the repository is defog-ai/factiq-plugin. In a managed workspace, ask an owner to allow custom plugin sources, connectors, developer mode, skills, and any required code-execution capability.

Authentication fails

Sign in to FactIQ in the browser used by your client, reconnect, and retry. Codex users can rerun codex mcp login factiq; Claude Code users can reconnect factiq from /mcp.

Tools are missing or stale

Reload plugins or restart the client, update the marketplace, and begin a new thread. Existing conversations may retain the old tool list.

Results are empty or truncated

Check the catalog and coverage dates. Broaden discovery terms for empty results; aggregate or narrow the date range when a result is truncated.
