Active fire and thermal anomaly detections, daily worldwide (NASA FIRMS)
Every active fire pixel NASA's VIIRS instrument has seen worldwide since January 2012, one row per detection: coordinate, time to the minute, fire radiative power in megawatts, brightness temperature, country and (for 17 countries) state. Used for crop-residue burning seasons, wildfire extent and intensity, deforestation clearing, and gas-flaring activity as an oil-and-gas production proxy. This schema does not follow the usual series/data_points layout — a detection is a one-off event, not a member of a named series — so query the detections table directly, and the pre-aggregated grid_daily and region_daily tables for totals over an area or a country. A detection is not a fire count: one fire produces many detections, and a fire that burns between satellite passes produces none. Always filter on type, since gas flares and volcanoes are recorded alongside vegetation fires.
In SQL, this dataset is the rows of nasa_fires.series with dataset_code = 'nasa_fires_detections'.
This source keeps its data in its own tables. Query them with SQL or use the dedicated tools.
