Long-term yields rose more than short-term yields

Treasury yields are the interest rates the US government pays when it borrows. Bonds sold off modestly on November 3 after a quiet Monday.

  • 10-year: 4.95%, up 4 basis points (bp, hundredths of a percentage point) from 4.91%.
  • 20-year: 5.35%, up 4bp.
  • 30-year: 5.32%, up 4bp.
  • 5-year: 4.74%, up 4bp.
  • 2-year: 4.61%, up 2bp.
  • Bills: The 3-month yield was flat at 4.21%. The 6-month yield was 4.26%. The 1-month yield eased to 4.03%.

The gap between the 2-year and 10-year yields widened to about 34bp from 32bp.

The 10-year yield is still below its October highs

Even after the selloff, the 10-year yield is about 24bp below its 5.19% level of October 14. It is also 10bp below its 5.05% reading on October 28. The 20-year bond still yields about 3bp more than the 30-year bond. This points to weak demand for the 20-year bond ahead of this week's quarterly refunding, when the Treasury sets out its plans for selling debt.

Total public debt edged down in early November

The Treasury's Debt to the Penny data track the federal government's daily debt. On November 2:

  • Total Public Debt Outstanding: $40.502 trillion. That is down about $22 billion from October 30 and about $92 billion below the October 29 level of $40.594 trillion.
  • Debt Held by the Public, owed to investors outside the federal government: $32.720 trillion, down about $19 billion.
  • Intragovernmental Holdings, owed to government trust funds and accounts: $7.782 trillion, down about $4 billion. This line had already fallen about $95 billion on October 30 in a normal month-end trust-fund move.

About FactIQ and these updates

  • What FactIQ is. FactIQ is a database of official statistics from government agencies, central banks and international organisations in the US, China, India, Europe and elsewhere. AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT connect to it to look up the exact figures and cite the agency that published them. It also holds what companies report in their filings and say on their earnings calls.
  • How an update is made. When U.S. Department of the Treasury publishes new figures, FactIQ loads them and an AI model writes a short summary of what changed. Before it is published, code checks that every number in the summary matches FactIQ's record of the release, and a second review checks that nothing is overstated. Values that look like errors in the source data are left out.
  • Where the numbers come from. Each key figure links to the full series, with its source, units and history.
