Biomedical manufacturing caused most of the slowdown
The index of industrial production (IIP) tracks how much Singapore's manufacturers produce. It is a key gauge of the economy. Biomedical manufacturing output fell 32.8% year on year (y/y) in September. Its pharmaceuticals segment fell 65.9% y/y, after a fall of 4.0% in August. Excluding biomedical, output grew 9.0% y/y, down from 16.8% in August. After adjusting for seasonal patterns, the total index fell to 104.9 from 109.2. That is a drop of about 3.9% month on month.Electronics growth faded sharply
- The electronics cluster grew 5.7% y/y, down from 28.3% in August.
- Semiconductors grew only 1.9% y/y, down from 25.9% in August and 53.5% in May.
- This is the weakest semiconductor reading in the recent run of data.
Engineering held up while chemicals kept shrinking
- Precision engineering grew 31.0% y/y, after 33.0% in August.
- Transport engineering rose 10.6%.
- Chemicals output fell 4.6% y/y. That is a smaller fall than August's -12.8%.
The third quarter was still stronger than a year earlier
In the third quarter (Q3) of 2026, the total index averaged 110.26. That is about 8.5% above Q3 2025 (101.65) and about 2% above the second quarter (108.11). Revisions raised July's headline growth to 7.5% y/y from 6.9%. June's growth was raised to 8.3% from 7.6%.Source: Singapore Department of Statistics. See all SINGSTAT data in FactIQ.
About FactIQ and these updates
- What FactIQ is. FactIQ is a database of official statistics from government agencies, central banks and international organisations in the US, China, India, Europe and elsewhere. AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT connect to it to look up the exact figures and cite the agency that published them. It also holds what companies report in their filings and say on their earnings calls.
- How an update is made. When Singapore Department of Statistics publishes new figures, FactIQ loads them and an AI model writes a short summary of what changed. Before it is published, code checks that every number in the summary matches FactIQ's record of the release, and a second review checks that nothing is overstated. Values that look like errors in the source data are left out.
- Where the numbers come from. Each key figure links to the full series, with its source, units and history.
