Peak-hour shortages also stopped after mid-October
Grid India publishes daily data on India's power grid. The energy shortage measures electricity demand that went unmet, in million units (MU), a measure of electrical energy. It stayed between 15 and 31 MU a day from 12 to 14 October. The shortage at the evening peak, measured in gigawatts (GW), shows how much power was missing at the busiest hour. It reached 5.8 GW on 3 October and 4.7 GW on 14 October. It was zero on most days after 18 October.Demand fell while hydro output kept dropping
The relief did not come from more supply.- Hydro generation fell from 601.5 MU on 29 September to 346.6 MU on 23 October.
- Coal generation was steady at roughly 3,700–4,170 MU a day.
- Energy met, meaning the demand the grid actually supplied, fell from 5,533 MU on 5 October to 5,011 MU on 23 October.
- The day's maximum demand fell from 260.7 GW to 234.0 GW.
New telecom data put India's wireless subscribers at 1,293.4m in August 2026
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data count mobile and other wireless subscribers by operator and region. In August 2026, India had 1,293.4m (million) wireless subscribers:- Jio: 508.4m
- Airtel: 491.6m
- Vodafone Idea: 199.6m, still slowly losing subscribers from 204.7m in April 2025
- BSNL: 93.7m
Homes and offices can get broadband over 5G fixed wireless access instead of a cable. Subscribers to this service reached 13.45m, up from 8.90m a year earlier. Jio had 9.42m of them and Airtel had 4.03m. Jio also had 5.37m subscribers to fixed wireless over unlicensed band radio (UBR). The Jio figures give context for its initial public offering (IPO).

About FactIQ and these updates
- What FactIQ is. FactIQ is a database of official statistics from government agencies, central banks and international organisations in the US, China, India, Europe and elsewhere. AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT connect to it to look up the exact figures and cite the agency that published them. It also holds what companies report in their filings and say on their earnings calls.
- How an update is made. When Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation India publishes new figures, FactIQ loads them and an AI model writes a short summary of what changed. Before it is published, code checks that every number in the summary matches FactIQ's record of the release, and a second review checks that nothing is overstated. Values that look like errors in the source data are left out.
- Where the numbers come from. Each key figure links to the full series, with its source, units and history.
