Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and the US made up part of the gap

Three suppliers sold India more crude in August than in July:
  • Iraq: $523.8m, up from $171.4m in July. In April it was $56.6m. This is still far below January and February, when it averaged about $1.7bn a month.

  • Venezuela: $542.2m, down from $896.9m. Crude imports from Venezuela restarted in April 2026.

Smartphone exports to the US and gold imports also fell

  • Smartphone exports to the US fell to $1,348.7m in August from $2,345.4m in July. They remain above the $964.8m recorded in August 2025.
  • Unwrought gold imports, meaning gold that has not yet been worked into products, fell from Switzerland to $754.2m from $1,580.7m. Imports from the UAE fell to $380.0m from $616.3m.
  • Petroleum product exports to the Netherlands dropped to $77.2m from $925.8m. India shipped no automotive diesel to the Netherlands in August. A similar dip happened in June.

About FactIQ and these updates

  • What FactIQ is. FactIQ is a database of official statistics from government agencies, central banks and international organisations in the US, China, India, Europe and elsewhere. AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT connect to it to look up the exact figures and cite the agency that published them. It also holds what companies report in their filings and say on their earnings calls.
  • How an update is made. When Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S) publishes new figures, FactIQ loads them and an AI model writes a short summary of what changed. Before it is published, code checks that every number in the summary matches FactIQ's record of the release, and a second review checks that nothing is overstated. Values that look like errors in the source data are left out.
  • Where the numbers come from. Each key figure links to the full series, with its source, units and history.
