Several banks reported problem loans in the third quarter of 2026
- Home Bancorp said it placed six loan relationships totaling $19.5 million on nonaccrual status, meaning the loans no longer accrue interest. It said it does not anticipate sizable losses from them. It said nonaccrual transfers and interest reversals reduced quarterly loan yield by approximately 12 basis points.
- Northrim BanCorp said it recorded an $8.8 million impairment on a loan amid payment disputes, uncertain insurance recoveries and the need to liquidate collateral.
- Unity Bancorp reported a probable broker fee expense of $405 thousand related to a $15.5 million commercial real estate relationship that had migrated to nonaccrual status.
- Private Bancorp of America said its criticized loans increased due to a bankruptcy affecting two related real estate investor loans and delinquencies on two Small Business Administration (SBA) 504 real estate loans.
Net interest margins moved in different directions
Net interest margin (NIM) is the gap between what a bank earns on loans and pays on deposits.
- Northrim BanCorp said a net interest margin above 5% helped drive a 21% increase in third-quarter pre-provision net revenue. It said third-quarter net interest income increased $3.5 million, or 11%, year over year.
- Home Bancorp said its net interest margin declined five basis points to 4.19%.
- Private Bancorp of America said its net interest margin declined 13 basis points from the prior quarter, mainly because of the prior quarter's nonaccrual interest adjustments.
- First Foundation Inc. (RBB) said its average interest-earning asset yield rose to 5.90% from 5.81%, and its average cost of funds declined to 2.97% from 3.00%.

- FreightCar America said it removed 1,285 railcars from its backlog because it believes the customer is unlikely to meet its contract obligations.

About FactIQ and these updates
- What FactIQ is. FactIQ is a database of official statistics from government agencies, central banks and international organisations in the US, China, India, Europe and elsewhere. AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT connect to it to look up the exact figures and cite the agency that published them. It also holds what companies report in their filings and say on their earnings calls.
- How an update is made. FactIQ reads each new earnings call or filing and stores the statements with numbers, each with the exact quote it came from. An AI model then writes a short summary of those statements. Before it is published, code checks that every number in the summary matches a stored statement, and a second review checks that nothing is overstated or presented as fact when the company only expects it.
- What this is not. The figures are what each company said or filed. FactIQ does not rate companies or recommend shares.
