Two steelmakers reported stronger results in their Form 8-K filings

A Form 8-K is the filing a US company makes to report a material event. Most of these filings carried results press releases.
  • Commercial Metals Company said its core EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 rose 35.1% year over year to $393.7 million. It said its margin expanded 100 basis points to 14.8%.
  • Commercial Metals said merchant bar shipments rose 27.5% year over year, driven by industrial and data center activity and expanded Arizona 2 production capacity.
  • Commercial Metals said Europe Steel adjusted EBITDA was $15.6 million versus $39.1 million a year earlier, primarily reflecting a prior-year $30.7 million CO₂ credit that did not recur.
  • Cleveland-Cliffs said its third-quarter 2026 adjusted EBITDA was above prior guidance. It said Stelco delivered its strongest quarter since Cleveland-Cliffs acquired it.
  • Cleveland-Cliffs said it expects a major debt reduction in the fourth quarter and that its 2027 outlook has improved materially.

Several banks linked their third-quarter 2026 results to interest rates and higher pay costs

  • Zions Bancorporation said its yield on average interest-earning assets, net of hedging, declined to 4.91% from 5.16%, primarily because of lower interest rates. It said salaries and employee benefits expense increased $8 million.
  • Western Alliance Bank Corporation said its credit loss provision reflected $45.8 million of net charge-offs, loan growth and proactive provisioning for macroeconomic risks associated with higher interest rates. It said non-interest expense increased $50.7 million from the third quarter of 2025, primarily due to higher salaries and benefits and data processing costs.
  • First Financial Bankshares reported net unrealized securities portfolio losses of $489.55 million at September 30, 2026, compared with $308.58 million a year earlier, due to changes in long-term market interest rates.
  • BOK Financial said its regular compensation expense rose primarily due to talent investments.

Other companies reported insurance, lending and deal updates

  • RLI Corp. said it delivered an 86 combined ratio for the third quarter of 2026. The combined ratio compares an insurer's claims and costs with its premiums. RLI said its investment income grew 13%.
  • Home Bancshares said its adjusted pre-provision net revenue (PPNR), its earnings before setting aside money for credit losses, was $166.6 million.
  • Crescent Energy said it is permitted to incur an unsecured bridge credit facility of up to $2.0 billion to help fund the Devon EF Assets Acquisition.

About FactIQ and these updates

  • What FactIQ is. FactIQ is a database of official statistics from government agencies, central banks and international organisations in the US, China, India, Europe and elsewhere. AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT connect to it to look up the exact figures and cite the agency that published them. It also holds what companies report in their filings and say on their earnings calls.
  • How an update is made. FactIQ reads each new earnings call or filing and stores the statements with numbers, each with the exact quote it came from. An AI model then writes a short summary of those statements. Before it is published, code checks that every number in the summary matches a stored statement, and a second review checks that nothing is overstated or presented as fact when the company only expects it.
  • What this is not. The figures are what each company said or filed. FactIQ does not rate companies or recommend shares.
